FAQS
WHO / WHAT IS ABINGTON QUARTERLY MEETING (AQM)?
Everyone in our nine meetings belong to AQM. The Quaker meetings in Abington Quarter are: Abington, Byberry, Gwynedd, Horsham, Norristown, Plymouth, Richland, Unami and Upper Dublin.
Since 1786, F/friends across Abington Quarter have gathered regularly to support our meetings, make friends, share worship, Quaker business, common concerns, learning, good food, and all ages fellowship in our region.
Today, AQM is alive with activities, resources, services, and community throughout the year.
Abington Quarter meets on the First Sunday of February, May, August and October for worship, business, programs for all ages, food, and fellowship.
Our sessions are hosted on a rotating basis at one of our nine Friends Meetings. Come visit with old and new friends!
WHY PARTICIPATE IN ABINGTON QUARTERLY MEETING SESSIONS?
Together, as a Quarter, we are stronger. Quarterly Meetings foster vitality in all our meetings, each other, and beyond.
As a Quaker, we grow spiritually, socially and in our faith by connecting to F/friends and Meetings across the Quarter.
Inter-visitation is one of the oldest and most rewarding practices of the Religious Society of Friends.
We learn how Spirit moves in other Quaker communities, allowing for deeper understanding and cooperation.
HOW / WHY DO QUARTERLY MEETINGS EXIST?
George Fox established Quarterly Meetings as part of a 3-tiered organizational structure for the emerging Religious Society of Friends in the late 1650’s.
He saw the need for Friends from adjacent worship groups to form a larger faith community so they could collectively protect vulnerable meetings, provide mutual aid, seek guidance, share resources, and respond collectively to shared concerns or those beyond the capacity of a single monthly meeting.
The three tiers were called Monthly Meeting, Quarterly Meeting, and Yearly Meeting. These names describe how often each held their regular 'business meeting', aka 'Meeting for Worship with Attention to Business'. Learning about and participating in this distinctly Quaker approach to decision-making is a fundamental responsibility of every meeting's members and attenders.
